What is a public IP address?
Your public IP address is the address assigned to your internet connection by your ISP. It is visible to any server you connect to. It is different from your private (local) IP address, which is only visible within your home or office network.
Note: If you are behind a VPN or proxy, the IP shown will be the exit node of that VPN or proxy, not your actual ISP address.
IPv4 vs IPv6
- IPv4 — The traditional format: four numbers separated by dots (
192.168.1.1). Still the most common. - IPv6 — The newer format: eight groups of hexadecimal digits (
2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334). Not all ISPs assign one by default.
If your network only supports IPv4, the IPv6 field will not appear.
Privacy
The tool does not log or store IP addresses. The lookup is performed server-side using the incoming HTTP request — no third-party API is called.
